Our Centre
As well as non-subject specific therapeutic learning activities, students will also participate in activities and functional skills, which will include English, Maths and Science. These will be taught in a way that is not ridged; lessons will involve other subjects and a mixture of computer based work as well as verbal and written.
English
Reading and Comprehension: Analysing newspaper articles, advertisements and short stories to extract key information and identify main ideas.
Writing/Handwriting Skills: This will involve writing emails, letters, CVs and job application forms using proper structure, grammar and intonation. This will also include Spelling, Grammar and Punctuation activities as well as writing for purpose, such as writing a diary entry or a recipe and method.
Speaking and Listening: Practicing effective communication through drama and role play scenarios, such as job interviews, customer service interactions or making telephone inquiries.
Mathematics
Budgeting and Finance: Creating personal budgets, calculating expenses and understanding concepts such as income, taxes and interest rates.
Measurement: Converting units of measurement such as length, weight, volume and time. Learning how to apply to everyday life such as in cooking or travelling and in various DIY Projects.
Data Handling: Interpreting graphs, charts and tables to extract information, analysing trends and making predictions based on data. Work also to include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals.
Science
Looking at Food and Nutrition and how healthy eating, exercise and a healthy lifestyle has an impact upon health and wellbeing.
Basic Anatomy and Physiology.
ICT (Information and Communication Technology)
Basic computer skills: Learning how to use word processing software, spreadsheets and computer tools effectively.
Learning how to research on the internet, evaluate information and to cite information properly.
Learning about online safety and security: Identifying potential online threats, protecting personal information and practicing safe internet browsing.
Students will also have the opportunity to learn how a computer works and maybe even build their own PC!
